Selandia Baru akan membantu memperkuat respons iklim Pasifik

Jayapura, Jubi – Pengaturan pendanaan baru untuk memperkuat ketahanan terhadap perubahan iklim di Pasifik, telah diumumkan di Samoa.

“Menteri Luar Negeri Selandia Baru Winston Peters dan direktur jenderal Sekretariat Program Lingkungan Regional (SPREP) Sefanaia Nawadra mengumumkan pendanaan baru di kantor pusat SPREP di ibu kota Samoa, Apia,” demikian dikutip Jubi dari rnz.co.nz, Minggu (11/2/2024).

Samoa menjadi perhentian terakhir delegasi Misi Pasifik Selandia Baru yang juga mengunjungi Kepulauan Cook dan Tonga.

“Selandia Baru dengan bangga mengkonfirmasi dukungan tambahan sebesar NZ$15,2 juta selama tiga tahun, untuk membantu SPREP memperkuat peran penting yang dimainkannya dalam memberikan saran dan dukungan di Pasifik,” kata Peters.

“SPREP fokus pada pembangunan ketahanan Pasifik terhadap ancaman serius yang ditimbulkan oleh perubahan iklim, dan investasi Selandia Baru akan memastikan bahwa kita dapat terus memprioritaskan hal ini,” tambahnya.

“Ini merupakan kontribusi yang signifikan untuk mendukung upaya kolektif kita, dalam memerangi dampak dari tiga tantangan yaitu perubahan iklim, hilangnya keanekaragaman hayati, dan polusi terhadap masyarakat dan komunitas Pasifik,” kata Peters.

SPREP adalah organisasi regional yang didirikan oleh Pemerintah dan Administrasi Pasifik yang bertugas melindungi dan mengelola lingkungan dan sumber daya alam Pasifik.

Kantor pusatnya berbasis di Apia, Samoa dengan kantor SPREP lainnya di Fiji, Republik Kepulauan Marshall, dan Vanuatu.

Perubahan iklim

Selama kunjungan ke Kepulauan Cook, pemerintah Selandia Baru memberikan komitmen sebesar NZ$16,5 juta ke Kepulauan Cook untuk mengatasi dampak perubahan iklim.

Peters mengumumkan komitmen pendanaan di Rarotonga (Rabu, waktu Kepulauan Cook. “Selandia Baru mendukung Kepulauan Cook dengan pendanaan sebesar NZ$16,5 juta untuk merespons secara lebih efektif terhadap meningkatnya dampak perubahan iklim,” katanya. (*)

Landowners choose sustainability over mining

The landowners of Namosi and Waidina have decided to forego any further land development for mining purposes.

This impactful announcement was made by Sipiriano Nariva, Chairman of the Namosi landowners committee “Lomani Au, Maroroi Au,” during an interview with FBC News.

Nariva says their motivation extends beyond immediate financial gain, with a strong focus on preserving their land and resources for future generations.

He adds that they are driven by a sense of responsibility toward their natural surroundings and firmly believe that the precious natural resources surrounding them belong to their progeny.

This is our collective decision: we don’t require further development. Our commitment is to safeguard our environment, protect our sources of sustenance, and ensure our safety for the long term.”

The collective determination of the villages in Namosi and Waidina has manifested in steadfast resistance against the renewal of the prospecting mining license held by the Namosi Joint Venture project.

This license was due for renewal two months ago but is currently on hold, pending the decision of relevant authorities.

This stance reflects the landowners’ commitment to sustainability and the safeguarding of their ancestral lands.

It is a testament to their dedication to preserving Fiji’s natural heritage and ensuring that future generations can inherit a bountiful and thriving environment.

𝗦𝘂𝘃𝗮, 𝗙𝗶𝗷𝗶 𝗝𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟯𝟭, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟮 – The Pacific Islands Development Forum (PIDF), a multilateral agency set-up as an action-oriented platform bringing together leaders from the public and private sectors and civil society to address regional development challenges, and to enable Green/Blue Pacific economies, announced today the launch of a new initiative to create a Pacific Green Growth Measurement Framework.
With a history of addressing economic, environmental, and social issues linked to climate change in the Pacific, this new PIDF initiative seeks to create a data framework for its members to track and improve upon the green and blue economy indicators that matter most for them. The project will include input from members of Pacific governments, NGOs, academia, and the private sector and will be led by Dual Citizen LLC, a US-based organization and creator of the Global Green Economy Index™ (GGEI), celebrating its 10-year anniversary in 2022.
“Pacific islands face unique climate vulnerabilities that are not always considered in global indices and sustainability measurement frameworks. By creating this Pacific Green Growth Measurement Framework, we hope to empower our members with data and understanding to target policies and finance to the areas that need it most,” said Ambassador Solo Mara, PIDF Secretary General.
“In proposing this new initiative, the PIDF is continuing the tradition of Pacific leadership around addressing climate change and promoting sustainable development. We see the 2020s as a decade of data localization and look forward to this opportunity to translate our expertise in green index construction to the Pacific context,” said Jeremy Tamanini, President of Dual Citizen LLC and Creator of the GGEI.
The initiative will be anchored around a series of stakeholder workshops to ensure that input from governments, private sector, NGOs and academic in the Pacific is integrated to the design of this new measurement framework.
